tracked it down to a issue with the asmedia drivers for thr usb 3.1 controller. Ok, so for my ASmedia USB 3.0 extensible Hostcontroller the solution was going into the devicemanager, right-clicking the device, and choosing 'update driver'. I tried - reinstall sun java and reinstall Firefox 3.5.10 via Yast2. Since I allowed Firefox to update, I have this problem, too ("gcjwebplugin error").
